The Bishop of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay has cautioned those in leadership positions within the Church against denying others the opportunity to receive God’s blessings, calling on them instead to encourage believers, especially those living in poverty, to participate fully in the life of the Church.
In his Wednesday, January 7, homily, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Homa Bay, Bishop Michael Otieno Odiwa, said that Church leaders should never become a barrier to blessings but should instead help Christians access them, recognizing the key role of Priests in offering blessings to the people of God.
“Church Leaders and advisors, do not deny Christians the opportunity for blessings. Encourage them... Do not be the cause of denying someone a blessing. Go and help them to receive blessings the Priests give,” Bishop Odiwa said during the Holy Mass with the Parish Pastoral Council members from the 48 Parishes in the Catholic Diocese of Homabay.
“Our numbers are our blessing,” the Bishop said, and added, “Each person contributes a little. Little by little, it fills the basket. The Priests are going to bless you today. Take those blessings to our Christians who need God’s blessing.”
The Catholic Bishop reflected on life challenges, acknowledging the journey of life, saying that it is often marked by “waves” that bring fear.
“There is an evil spirit that makes us afraid, but despite all this, Jesus says, ‘Do not be afraid, it is I,” he said.
The 63-year-old Bishop encouraged Church leaders to recognize their God-given potential and capacity, reminding them that fear should not prevent them from receiving blessings.
“You have the potential and the opportunity to receive the blessing. May God be with you. May God purify your hearts and your minds, and may you be able to do this beautiful thing for God, because we are here for a season,” he said.
