Mons. Emile Mushosho Matabaro who has been serving as Apostolic Administrator of Doruma-Dungu Diocese in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since July 2021 has been appointed the Local Ordinary of the same Congolese Episcopal See.
The appointment of the Congolese Cleric was made public by the Holy See Press Office on Monday, October 24, and announced in the Diocese by the Secretary General of the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), Mons. Donatien Nshole.
“I have the joy to inform you that by its letter referenced n°4865, of 20 October 2022, the Apostolic Nunciature in DR Congo, asks the National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO), to bring to your attention that it has pleased His Holiness Pope Francis to appoint Monsignor Emile Mushosho Matabaro, as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Dungu-Doruma,” Mons. Nshole announced October 24.
He added, “The General Secretariat of CENCO is delighted with this news; it presents its warm and sincere congratulations to His Excellency Bishop Emile Mushosho and wishes him a fruitful episcopal ministry in the Church-Family of God, which is in Dungu-Doruma.”
The Bishop-elect is expected to take over from late Bishop Richard Domba Mady who died in July 2021.
Born in March 1967, Mons. Matabaro was ordained a Priest of the Archdiocese of Bukuva in DRC on 17 September 2000.
He studied for a licentiate in theology from 2007 to 2012, and from 2013 to 2017, a doctorate in theology at the Universidad San Dámaso (UESD) in Madrid, Spain.
Before he was appointed Apostolic Administrator, Mons. Matabaro had served in various positions, including Parish Vicar and Parish Priest of Ciherano (2000-2003); Parish Priest of Saint Pierre in Cibimbi (2003-2007) and of Bagira Parish (2011).
He also served as Director of the Diocesan Office for Social Works and Development (2011-2012); president of the Union of Diocesan Clergy (2011-2013); bursar and moderator of the Diocesan Commission for Assets (2017-2018); Episcopal Vicar in-charge of economic affairs and chancellor (2018-2019).
From 2019 to 2021 he served as Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Bukavu.
When ordained a Bishop, Mons. Matabaro will serve as the fourth Local Ordinary of Doruma-Dungu Diocese that was erected in February 1958 as Prefecture Apostolic of Doruma and elevated to the Diocese of Doruma in September 1967.
