Members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State are calling upon lawmakers in the West African nation to elect leaders in the Senate and National Assembly, who are not foster partisan biases.
Nigeria’s Senators and Members of Parliament (MPs) are expected to elect their speakers, deputy speakers, chief whips, the minority and majority leaders, in June this year.
In a Monday, May 22 report, the Chairman of CAN in Kaduna says, “Those who eventually become leaders of the National Assembly must be lawmakers who would guide their colleagues to make laws for the common good of the country not as representatives of their regional or religious enclaves.”
Pastor John Joseph Hayab adds that the lawmakers will make Nigeria a great nation if they wisely choose from among them competent leaders with good experience to do the needed task while respecting regional and religious affiliations.
“CAN as a body has earlier advocated for fairness before the general election and believes strongly that a fair and just Nigeria is beneficial to Nigeria’s unity and growth,” he says.
The official of the Christian entity that includes representatives of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) also urges the lawmakers of Africa’s most populous nation to desist from actions that bring about discord among Nigerians.
The Chairman of CAN in Kaduna State further calls upon the elected representatives of the people to “promote matters that could support the citizenry to attain the goals of a unified nation.”
“CAN strongly appeals to the political class to consider the entire country as their most important constituency, rather than promote primordial sentiments that lead to no development at all,” says Pastor Hayab.
