South Sudanese Archbishop Whose Transfer was Resisted among 21 Newly Named Cardinals

The Local Ordinary of South Sudan’s Juba Archdiocese, whose transfer to the country’s only Metropolitan See was resisted amid multiple protest letters is among the new Cardinals that Pope Francis has named.

Archbishop Stephen Ameyu Martin is among the 21 Catholic Church leaders, to be made Cardinals during the next Consistory, which the Holy Father said would take place on September 30.

Other new Cardinals from Africa include Archbishop Stephen Brislin of Cape Town in South Africa, and Archbishop Protase Rugambwa, the former Secretary of the Dicastery for Evangelization, who was appointed the Coadjutor Archbishop for Tanzania’s Tabora Archdiocese on April 13.

Pope Francis announced the new Consistory from a window overlooking St. Peter’s Square after reciting the Angelus prayer on Sunday, July 9.

The list of the new Cardinals also includes nine from Europe, three from Asia, five from Central and Latin America. Three of the newly named Cardinals are over the age of 80.
