Archbishop Stephen Ameyu Martin of South Sudan’s Catholic Archdiocese of Juba has cautioned members of the Young Christian Students (YCS) in his Metropolitan See against religious discrimination.

In his homily during the commissioning of YCS members, which the Catholic Radio Network (CRN) reported Tuesday, September 12, Archbishop Ameyu encouraged the Christian students to work towards the progress of the association by increasing their membership.

“Let our denominational beliefs not separate us,” the Local Ordinary of South Sudan’s only Metropolitan See, who was named Cardinal on July 9 is quoted as saying in the report, and adds, “There are forces that are stronger than us, and if we are not united, those forces are going to throw us away.”

He is said to have underscored the need for unity in their denominational diversity, saying, “So young people, I know you are from different Christian denominations; so as young Christian students, I would like you to bring all the young people to this organization of YCS.”

“Young Christian Students is an association that is meant to mentor youth in a Godly way,” he says in the CRN report, adding, “I am sending you and commissioning you to go and evangelize. Your task is to convince other young people to join the Young Christian Students Movement.”

Archbishop Ameyu tasked the YCS members “to look after the lost sheep of God and bring them to the mission of Christ,” adding that “when young people get the words of God, peace and unity will reign in society.”

In the September 12 report, the South Sudanese Catholic Archbishop advocates for constructive ways of engaging social media, urging young Christians to nurture their relationship with God.
