On the occasion of the Solemnity of St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Local Ordinary of the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia in Nigeria, Peter Ebere Cardinal Okpaleke, has challenged citizens of the West Africa nation to be proactive, working towards resolving the challenges in the country.

In his message for the March 19 Solemnity, Cardinal Okpaleke appeals to citizens of Africa’s most populous nation to “do something to help to resolve the challenges of this time, especially the challenge of hunger.”

“I propose that we all go back to the farms in this Diocese of Ekwulobia and beyond,” the Nigerian Cardinal says, and adds, “I exhort all the faithful, including Priests and Consecrated Persons, to go back to the farm. Let there be no empty plots around us.”

He continues, “We can help ourselves by doing our best. Plant trees, plant vegetables, plant whatever we can so that in the next few weeks you will smile. God will help us.”

Cardinal Okpaleke asks Nigerians to draw inspiration from St. Joseph, who had a proactive spirit. He says, “It was such a situation during the time of Joseph himself. People were hungry. He himself was hungry. He did something by the work of his hands.”

“I therefore, once more invite all the faithful and people of goodwill to do something and as we do that as adults, we help our young ones to take pride in their work so that they will be satisfied when they receive the fruits of their labor,” the Nigerian Catholic Church leader, who resigned in 2018 following sustained opposition to his Episcopal appointment for Nigeria’s Ahiara Diocese says.

He adds, “We can do this by invoking the intercession of St. Joseph. We can also do this by learning or drawing from the virtues of St. Joseph, and one of such virtues I want to emphasize or highlight today, is the virtue of the value, dignity, and joy of work.”

“Jesus himself, as a member of the Holy Family worked hard, learned from Joseph the work of carpentry. We can see that in his parables and his teachings,” he further says.

The Catholic Church leader, who was among the 20 Cardinals created during the August 2022 Consistory following his naming in May 2022 continues, “It is an eye opener, an invitation that in our daily works, in our daily labour, we encounter God. We encounter God in his blessings, in his richness.”

“As we work, especially within this period, we pray to the Lord to bless the work of our hands so that we shall live, feed ourselves, feed others, and then praise God and live our lives as Christians, as Catholics,” Cardinal Okpaleke implores in his message for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, March 19.
