The Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) has decried economic challenges in the West African Nation noting that many Nigerians are traumatized as a result of the hardships they are facing.

In an interview with ACI Africa on Wednesday, April 17, Fr. Zacharia Samjumi urged Nigerians to speak out and seek help when traumatized.

“Generally, at the moment, what is obvious are the issues of terrorism or kidnapping, banditry, or even robberies. But I must tell you that economic hardships in the country have pushed a lot of Nigerians into trauma,” Fr. Samjumi told ACI Africa on the sidelines of the launch of Misereor Dialogue and Partnership Service ‘stories of pain and hope’ brochure.

He added, “The situation we find ourselves in as a country has now become worse with the food insecurity adding to our problems. Families cannot buy decent food to eat, food inflation is at the rooftop and many families are at the verge of disintegrating because of hardships.”

“You go to the market today to buy something, the next day you go back and you cannot afford what you bought yesterday. Food insecurity is a very important factor forcing Nigerians into trauma,” the Catholic Priest said.

The CSN Secretary General advised aggrieved Nigerians to speak out and seek help and not die in silence especially when they are experiencing trauma.

“Our community leaders, religious leaders and stakeholders can come together to provide healing to the traumatized person but this cannot happen unless the person speaks out and calls for help,” Fr. Samjumi said.

He said, “The majority of our people don't even understand that they are traumatized because a lot is happening in our country.”
