Catholic youths in Malawi have been called upon to prioritize Jesus Christ and to respond to His call to a lifelong service of the Gospel message.

The Chairman of the Pastoral Commission of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), Bishop Martin Anwel Mtumbuka made the call in his homily on Good Shepherd Sunday, the annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations 2024 marked on the Fourth Sunday of Easter.

In a Monday, April 22 report, details of the Local Ordinary of Malawi’s Catholic Diocese of Karonga are published.

Addressing himself to youths, who were part of the congregation at St. Martins de Porres Parish of his Episcopal See, Bishop Mtumbuka said, “Jesus is calling you my dear young people to follow Him; He wants you to give Him priority in your lives; He wants you to handover yourself entirely in his hands.”

“I beg you, young people, to have courage and offer yourselves like your brothers and sisters” (pointing at priests and the religious),” he said, and added, “Do not become slaves of worldly things, do not be afraid of following Christ.”

The Malawian Catholic Church leader continued, “Imitate the greatest, (Jesus). Do not just think of things of this world ... True freedom is found in Christ; do not be selfish with your gifts, and do not be proud when God he is calling you.”

Jesus, who has walked with His people since time immemorial, continues to walk with them even today, including the youths, he went on to say, adding that Jesus’ objective is to satisfy every person.

Turning his attention to the Clergy, Bishop Mtumbuka emphasized the need for “pastoral zeal” and positive witnessing.

“The way you live, celebrate, and proclaim your vocations as the greatest witness to these young people,” he said, adding, “Let there be priests with pastoral zeal”.

He continued, “Let there be religious men and women who have no other commitments apart from preaching and ministering…Let there be men and women who manifest clearly that they love Christ, not becoming slaves of ‘Isms’ and other ideologies”.

The 66-year-old Local Ordinary of Karonga Diocese, who has been at the helm of the Malawian Diocese since his Episcopal Ordination in November 2010 challenged parents and guardians to facilitate the embracing of Jesus’ call in their respective families.

“Vocations grow in Christian communities. It is, therefore, your duty as parents to turn your homes into Christian communities, teach and hand over your faith to children,” the Malawian Catholic Bishop is quoted as saying in the April 22 report.
