Ugandan Auxiliary Bishop Appointed Archbishop

Archbishop-elect Lambert Bainomugisha, appointed as the new Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese in Uganda on April 25, 2020

The Auxiliary Bishop of Uganda’s Mbarara Archdiocese, Lambert Bainomugisha has been appointed Archbishop of the same See where his predecessor has reached the canonical age limit.

The Saturday, April 25 appointment was made public in Uganda by the Apostolic Nuncio in the East African country, Archbishop Luigi Bianco in a letter addressed to the Catholic media.

“The Apostolic Nunciature has the joy to announce that the Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Rt. Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha Auxiliary Bishop of Mbarara, as the new Archbishop of Mbarara, while accepting the resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese presented by Most Rev. Paul K. Bakyenga, upon reaching the canonical age limit,” Archbishop Bianco stated in his letter that had been under embargo until April 25, 1 p.m. East African time (noon Rome time).

The 58-year-old Archbishop-elect was ordained a priest of Mbarara Archdiocese, Western Uganda in July 1991. He holds a doctorate in Canon Law from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada.

He has been the Auxiliary Bishop of Mbarara since October 2005. He also served as Apostolic Administrator of Uganda’s Hoima diocese from November 2009 to February 2016.

The Ugandan-born Archbishop-elect is the Chairman of the Legal Service Commission at the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC).

In his letter, the Nuncio in Uganda congratulated the Archbishop-elect and expressed gratitude to the outgoing 75-year-old Archbishop Paul K. Bakyenga for his “generous service and leadership for more than three decades as Coadjutor, Bishop and the first Archbishop of Mbarara.”

The Archbishop emeritus will remain as the Apostolic Administrator of Mbarara until the day of the canonical possession by the new Archbishop, the Nuncio in Uganda stated in his letter.

The Metropolitan See of Mbarara, which is located in the West of Uganda and borders Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was erected as a Vicariate Apostolic of Ruwenzori in May 1934, before Pope Pius XII elevated it to Mbarara diocese in March 1953.

Pope St. John Paul II elevated the See to the rank of an Archdiocese in January 1999.
