The Auxiliary Bishop of Uganda’s Mbarara Archdiocese, Lambert Bainomugisha has been appointed Archbishop of the same See where his predecessor has reached the canonical age limit.
The Saturday, April 25 appointment was made public in Uganda by the Apostolic Nuncio in the East African country, Archbishop Luigi Bianco in a letter addressed to the Catholic media.
“The Apostolic Nunciature has the joy to announce that the Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Rt. Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha Auxiliary Bishop of Mbarara, as the new Archbishop of Mbarara, while accepting the resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese presented by Most Rev. Paul K. Bakyenga, upon reaching the canonical age limit,” Archbishop Bianco stated in his letter that had been under embargo until April 25, 1 p.m. East African time (noon Rome time).
The 58-year-old Archbishop-elect was ordained a priest of Mbarara Archdiocese, Western Uganda in July 1991. He holds a doctorate in Canon Law from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada.
He has been the Auxiliary Bishop of Mbarara since October 2005. He also served as Apostolic Administrator of Uganda’s Hoima diocese from November 2009 to February 2016.
