Bishop Michael Gobal Gokum of the Catholic Diocese of Pankshin in Nigeria has expressed sorrow over the mass displacement of residents in his Episcopal See as a result of insecurity.

In an interview with ACI Africa on Easter Tuesday, April 22, Bishop Gokum said violence in Bokkos and other parts of Nigeria’s Plateau State has left thousands of people homeless, with many now living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

“I feel very sad seeing my flock always on the road, carrying their belongings, crying and wailing because of the insecurity in their communities,” he lamented, and added, “I cannot be an effective shepherd when the people are unhappy; when they are unsafe; and when they are forced to live in IDP camps.”

The Nigerian Catholic Bishop disclosed that Pankshin Diocese is offering shelter and aid to thousands of displaced persons at St. Thomas Bokkos Catholic Parish.

“In Bokkos, one of our parishes, we have more than 2,300 IDPs currently staying within Church premises. There are Catholics and non-Catholics staying there,” Bishop Gokum said.

He expressed concern about the failure of authorities to end violence in Plateau State and other parts of the country.

Bishop Gokum called on governments at all levels to fulfill their constitutional duty of protecting citizens’ lives and property.

“The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. Governments at all levels must rise to this responsibility and stop the senseless killings across our country,” he said.

The Catholic Bishop called upon the Nigerian government “to do the right thing. Forget politics. Focus on people. Whether they support your party or not, they are human beings. They are Nigerians. They have the right to live.”

Bishop Gokum attributed the violence to the struggle for land, saying the attacks are often carried out to force residents from their ancestral homes.

“You must have heard the Governor speak about this. It is terrorism. People are using fear and violence to force communities off their land so they can take over. The Governor has confirmed that at least sixty-five villages in Plateau State have been taken over. It is mostly about grazing and land ownership,” the Nigerian Catholic Church leader explained.

He disclosed that Church and community leaders have held several meetings with the government to address the crisis, but with limited success.

“We have met the Governor privately several times. Even the previous administration had discussions with us. They always say they are working on it, but at times, they appear helpless. Still, we must speak up. We must act,” Bishop Gokum told ACI Africa on Easter Tuesday.

Despite the challenges, the Local Ordinary of Pankshin remains hopeful, encouraging the people of God to remain firm in their faith.

“We pray for peace across Nigeria – from Katsina to Sokoto, from Plateau to Benue, from Anambra to Rivers. Many are hungry and frustrated. Let those who have share with those who do not. Let us forgive and walk together. Let us choose peace, not retaliation,” he implored.

The Nigerian Catholic Bishop, who has been at the helm of Pankshin Diocese since his Episcopal Consecration in June 2014 appealed for prayers for peace and unity, especially in his Episcopal See.

“I want my people to live together in peace. If someone offends you, report it to the authorities. Let us not take the law into our hands. I pray that the peace of Christ will reign in every part of this Diocese this Easter season and beyond,” Bishop Gokum told ACI Africa on April 22.
