Tanzanian Cardinal Calls for Spiritual Closeness with Cardinals ahead of Selection of New Pope

Protase Cardinal Rugambwa of Tanzania’s Catholic Archdiocese of Tabora has appealed for spiritual solidarity with the College of Cardinals entrusted with leading the Church during the Papal Interregnum, the period between the passing or resignation of a pope and the election of his successor.

In his homily during a Memorial Mass in honor of the late Pope Francis, who passed on on April 21 at the age of 88, Cardinal Rugambwa underscored the significance of spiritual solidarity during the transitional period.

“As is the norm, we are invited by the Mother Church, especially at a time like this when the Church is without its leader, to pray first and foremost for this leader,” he said in his homily during the memorial Mass at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Cathedral of his Metropolitan See on Tuesday, April 22.

He continued, “I would like us to continue doing this within our small Christian communities: to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father, that Almighty God may receive him into eternal life. But along with that, we pray for our Church, that it may remain in peace and continue to fulfill what we are called to do.”

“In a special way, let us pray for all the Cardinals, those who have no impediments and are expected to be in Rome according to the set procedures to prepare for the various meetings: first, for the funeral arrangements of Pope Francis, and afterward, for the preparations for electing a new Pope,” he said.

Cardinal Rugambwa, who was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Tabora in April 2023 and elevated to Cardinal in September 2023, also urged prayers for  “servants and for all who will participate in one way or another in these upcoming responsibilities.”

The Tanzanian-born Catholic Church leader who will be participating in the general congregations of Cardinals in Rome, offered prayers for God’s guidance during the Papal Interregnum, saying, “may it begin with Him as it always has, and may it be fulfilled in Him.”

The first general congregation of Cardinals, following the passing on of Pope Francis took place in Rome on Tuesday April 22, during which the Cardinals in attendance set the papal funeral for Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. Rome time in St. Peter’s Square.

In his April 22 homily, the third Cardinal in Tanzania, coming after the late Laurean Cardinal Rugambwa and  Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, emphasized the importance of honoring Pope Francis’ legacy and being prepared to carry on the mission of the Church.

He said, “We too would like to follow in his footsteps in the many things he did fearlessly, as is now being reported through various media outlets, and in many other things that we know or have seen, especially those who lived close to him and worked with him can testify to what he did.”

“We are invited, just as those apostles were, to be ready to carry on the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ,” he said, adding, “This includes bringing along the many other followers who will acknowledge the Lord and eventually live according to what He has directed, both in word and in deed.”
