Archbishop Gabriel Sayaogo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Koupéla in Burkina Faso has expressed hope in the support and cooperation of his colleagues during his mandate as President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Burkina Faso and Niger (CEBN).

Speaking to journalists on Monday, June 16, Archbishop Sayaogo, who was elected on June 13, thanked CEBN members for their confidence in him to lead the two-nation forum.

“I now count on the cooperation and support of my fellow Bishops, the general secretaries and their deputies, to ensure a continuous renewal of the spirit that animates our Episcopal Conference,” the Burkinabe Catholic Bishop said.

Archbishop Sayaogo noted that collaboration would be vital, given the geographic distances between key leaders: the president is based 140 km from Ouagadougou, the vice-president 391 km, and the Bishops elected to the permanent council and economic affairs reside 231 km and 220 km away, respectively.

“I rely on your availability, selflessness, responsiveness, creative freedom, and spontaneity for a continually renewed dynamism of our Conference,” he added.

The new CEBN President expressed gratitude to his predecessor, Archbishop Laurent Birfuoré Dabiré of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bobo-Dioulasso, acknowledging the energy and dedication he brought to the Conference.

“Your Excellency, thank you for having led our Burkina-Niger Episcopal Conference for six years, over two terms. We made significant progress in our collective journey as Bishops and as the Church family of God,” Archbishop Sayaogo said.

He added, “Congratulations for the renewed dynamism you breathed into our Conference.”

In his farewell remarks, Archbishop Dabiré thanked his brother Bishops for their trust and collaboration during his tenure and presented an overview of the work done over the past six years.

He also expressed confidence in his successor’s leadership abilities, saying, “Knowing him, I am certain that he will carry this mission forward. The Conference will continue to grow.”

Archbishop Dabiré urged the new CEBN leadership to “be attentive to people. Listen to them. Value them. That’s how you will best understand and respond to their needs.”

In the new CEBN leadership team, Archbishop Sayaogo will be assisted by Bishop Ollo Modeste Kambou of Gaoua Diocese as Vice President.
