Jubilee of Bishops in Malawi Ends with Invitation to be “true channels of God’s love”

The ongoing Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year and the Synod on Synodality, is a call to transformation that invites the people of God to become true channels of His love, the Local Ordinary of Zimbabwe's Catholic Diocese of Hwange has said.

In his homily on Wednesday, September 3, during the closing Mass for the Jubilee of Bishops in Malawi, Bishop Raphael Macebo Mabuza Ncube, highlighted the connection between the two, noting that they both invite the faithful to embody and radiate God’s love as true channels of His grace.

“This Jubilee, therefore, together with the Synod on Synodality, teaches us not to be mere recipients of God’s love,” Bishop Ncube said during the Eucharistic Celebration that was held at St. Patrick Parish of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe.

He continued, “It teaches us not to be mere beneficiaries of God’s love, but to be true channels of God’s love.”

The Bishop emphasized that, in celebrating the “mystery of God’s love,” during the Jubilee Year, the people of God are encouraged to become “true instruments in the hands of God” and accept to radiate His love to others.

“We are the disciples of Christ who come together to listen to His word, to receive life as He proclaims it. But at the same time, as a family, going out as mothers and fathers, as young people to proclaim what we have received ourselves to the world for its transformation,” he said, stressing the importance of creating opportunities for both members of the Church and those outside it to encounter and experience God’s love.

In his September 3 homily, Bishop Ncube, who had earlier in the day facilitated a recollection session for the Catholic Bishops in Malawi, lauded the members of the Malawi Conference of Catholic Bishops (MCCB) for leading by example in celebrating the Jubilee Year.

“It is God’s year of favor. This is what we celebrate and this is what our bishops spent this day celebrating, our shepherds leading by example, leading the people of God in celebrating the mystery of God's love, for God's love overflows,” said the 51-year-old Zimbabwean Catholic Bishop.

He expressed hope that the ongoing Jubilee Year of the Church would foster unity in the Church, making it ‘a true family where the poor may find joy, where the marginalized may be respected, and where the ignorant may be instructed. Let it be a family of growth.” 

“When we understand the church as a family, we'll come together and grow up together and deepen our faith together. We'll love the church. We’ll always long to be together, for we understand ourselves as a family,” he said in his September 3 homily, describing the Church as a family with four essential characteristics: generation, nurturing, belonging, and mission.

He implored God to continue pouring His blessings upon the Church in Malawi, “that it may continue to grow and firmly deepen its roots. May this Church bear fruit. May this Church be seen, and may this Church transform lives, and indeed may it transform the world.”
