After Hosting Pope Francis, Maputo to Host IMBISA Bishops in November

Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, which just hosted Pope Francis during his three-nation pastoral visit of Africa will be the venue for the 12th Plenary Assembly of the Inter-Regional Meeting of the Bishops of Southern Africa (IMBISA).

“We expect among the attendees 80 bishops from the whole region made up of six Episcopal conferences in nine countries,” the Secretary General of IMBISA, Fr. Claudio dos Reis told ACI Africa Wednesday.

Set to begin on November 13, the four-day Plenary Assembly will gather Bishops from Angola, Eswatini, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Sao Tome and Principe, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

“We shall let you know the theme of this plenary when it has been approved,” Harare-based IMBISA Secretary General, Fr. Reis told ACI Africa

According to a statement from IMBISA avail to ACI-Africa, the Bishops’ plenary will focus on leadership, safeguarding of children and care for our common home: the earth.

“The local Catholic community throughout the country has already begun preparations to host the event,” reads the statement on IMBISA’s website

Mobilization for the IMBISA Plenary Mass is targeting the 1,030-person choir that animated the Public Papal Mass at the Zempeto stadium in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo.

With its mission to foster the spirit of communion within the Universal Church, IMBISA comprises the Episcopal conferences of Mozambique, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Sao Tome and Principe and the Southern African Bishops’ Conference (Botswana, Eswatini, South Africa.)

The last IMBISA plenary assembly was held in Maseru – Lesotho in November 2016 under the theme: “Empowering the Laity for effective engagement in socio-political and environmental issues: Laudato Si as point of reference.”
