The representative of the Holy Father challenged members of the Inter-Regional Meeting of the Bishops of Southern Africa (IMBISA) to foster the formation of the people of God in theology.

In his remarks during the opening ceremony of the 14th Plenary Assembly of IMBISA and the Golden Jubilee of the nine-member regional association, Archbishop Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński also underlined the value of capacity building and encouraged walking together amid challenges.

“The Church in Africa and beyond needs to hear the theological voice of Southern Africa rooted in the unique experience and challenges,” Archbishop Jagodziński said on Thursday, September 25, the second day of the event being held in Eswatini’s only Catholic Diocese of Manzini.

The Vatican diplomat, who also represents the Holy Father in Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia emphasized that “IMBISA should become not only a place of formation but also a source of theological creativity for the universal Church, even amid obstacles.”

He acknowledged the financial challenges that IMBISA Secretariat faces, the limited online participation of some regional conferences, the discouragement caused by low virtual attendance, and the strain of sustaining operations and urged perseverance.

The Polish-born Vatican diplomat cautioned IMBISA members against despair, saying that the “challenges are not signs of weakness, but an invitation to renew our commitments.”

Even amid challenges, he called for walking forward uniquely as disciples of Christ, building bridges of reconciliation, dialogue, and peace within the region and beyond.

He said, “IMBISA is first and foremost an instrument of service to the Bishops of this region. It is important to continue the formation of new Bishops, offering them workshops and opportunities to grow in their ministry.”

“It is equally important to care for those who have carried this responsibility for many years, offering them ongoing formation, fraternity, and spiritual support. No bishop should feel alone in his ministry. The challenges of our region are many,” he said.

In the presence of violent conflict, humanitarian crises, and natural disasters experienced in some countries within the region, Archbishop Jagodziński said, “In such moments, the presence of our brother Bishops brings consolation and courage.”

More in Africa

He explained that when even two or three Bishops travel to visit a Diocese in distress, they embody the solidarity of Christ himself. He said, “Our closeness is not just symbolic. It is a source of real hope.”

He expressed joy that, despite these challenges, IMBISA has made significant progress, including fostering youth leadership through Christ-centered gatherings and establishing new partnerships with international organizations and Church institutions.

The Nuncio also highlighted initiatives such as the South African program, the Justice and Peace efforts, election observation missions, and pastoral visits of solidarity among IMBISA’s achievements, noting that these initiatives strengthen both its online presence and regional dialogue.

“These achievements remind us that IMBISA is not simply an administrative body; It is a living sign of the Church's communion in Southern Africa; It is a beacon of hope,” Archbishop Jagodziński said.

Eswatini is hosting the September 24 – 29 double celebration of the 14th Plenary Assembly and the Golden Jubilee. The Golden Jubilee celebration has been organized on the theme, “IMBISA Golden Jubilee: A Synodal journey, nourished by compassion and blossoming in faith as pilgrims of hope.”

In a press briefing on August 27, Bishop José Luís Gerardo Ponce de León said 120 delegates drawn from the nine countries of IMBISA, including Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, Clergy, women, and men Religious, and Laity, are expected to grace the Jubilee celebration.

IMBISA brings together members from Angola, São Tomé and Príncipe, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.

In his September 25 remarks, the Nuncio urged the Bishops in Southern Africa to Journey together in the spirit of Synodality.

“The world needs a Church that is synodal, missionary, and prophetic. Southern African Bishops and local churches who walk together will support one another and will give witness to the unity that comes from Christ,” he said, and added, “let us recommit ourselves to communion, participation, and mission.”

The Nuncio continued, “Let us continue to make IMBISA a place where the voice of the poor is heard, where the wounds of the suffering are attended, and where the hope of the Gospel shines brightly.”

“We place this assembly under the maternal protection of Mary, Mother of the Church, and we invoke the intercession of the Saints of Africa who walk this land before us,” Archbishop Jagodziński said.

He implored, “May the Holy Spirit bless your deliberation, strengthen your communion, and guide you toward a decision that will bear fruit for the Church and the people of Southern Africa.”

“Let us ask for the grace to walk together with courage and humility. Let us not only celebrate the past 50 years but also prepare with hope for the 50 years to come,” he told members of IMBISA, the regional Catholic Bishops’ forum established in April 1975 in Pretoria.
