Bishop Eusebius Jelous Nyathi of the Catholic Diocese of Gokwe in Zimbabwe has described the three-day Jubilee of the Synodal Teams and Participatory Bodies in Rome, which concluded on October 26, as “fruitful.”

In an interview with Kati Dijane of Far East Rand Catholic News on the sidelines of the October 24-26 event, Bishop Nyathi said the experience has renewed his commitment to fostering a Church where all the baptized journey together without exclusion.

“It's a pleasure for me to be here and participate in this Jubilee of the Synodal Teams and Participatory Bodies, which has been a fruitful meeting,” the Zimbabwean Catholic Bishop said on October 25.

Bishop Nyathi said the workshops offered “very enriching” insights that will help Dioceses across Africa live the recommendations of the multi-year XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which the late Pope Francis extended to 2024.

“We hope that for us in Zimbabwe and Africa, we can try to journey together with the universal Church, trying to be as much as possible, a synodal Church that journeys together and not leaving anyone behind, creating an environment where everyone can participate and respond to their Christian calling, to vocation; to go out to the mission, reaching out and bringing everyone so that they can be part of the members of this family of God,” the Catholic Church leader said.

He emphasized the importance of intentionally reaching out and inviting more people into the “family of God.”

The Local Ordinary of Gokwe Diocese since his Episcopal Consecration in September 2023 identified young people as a priority, expressing concern that many drift away due to a lack of inclusion.

“The first step to be with the youth is to invite them so that they can come,” he said, noting that giving young people platforms to speak is essential in “helping the Church understand their needs, thoughts, and gifts.”

He added, “This is how we can know their mind… and how best they can also participate and be active within the Church.”

Bishop Nyathi emphasized that synodality is not a theoretical concept, but a lived experience centered on theme of the Synod on Synodality, that is, participation, communion, and mission.

More in Africa

“We are called to go out, reaching out and bringing everyone so that they can be part of the members of this family of God,” the Catholic Bishop said.

The Jubilee of Synodal Teams and Participatory Bodies gathered over 2,000 members of synodal and participatory structures from Dioceses, Eparchies, and Episcopal Conferences around the world.

The event marked a significant step in putting into practice the orientations that emerged from the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, emphasizing the Church’s call to become more participatory, inclusive, and missionary in its outreach.
