The Local Ordinary of Kenya’s Catholic Diocese of Kitale has expressed spiritual solidarity with the people affected by the October 31 devastating landslide, which left more than 26 people dead in the country's Eldoret Diocese.

In his homily on Wednesday, November 5, when he presided over the annual Peace Mass that brings together the Catholic Dioceses of Eldoret, Lodwar, and his Episcopal See, Bishop Henry Juma Odonya said in reference to the landslide victims, “We place them all in God’s hands. May they have peace and comfort.”

“We pray for the Christians of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret and those from the Chesongoch Parish and other parts of Kenya who have lost their lives or property,” said the Bishop during the event that was held in Chesegon within the Lomut Parish of his Episcopal See.

He added, “May the God of peace bless them and give them comfort during this time of trial. We offer prayers for our departed loved ones, particularly in November, a month dedicated to honoring the deceased.”

According to a BBC report on November 1, Kenya’s Ministry of Interior indicated that 21 people had died as a result of the October 31 landslide, which was triggered by heavy rains in the country’s western region.

Interior Minister Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen said more than 30 people were still missing, while 25 seriously injured survivors had been airlifted for further treatment.

In his November 5 homily, Bishop Odonya also emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence among communities in the North Rift region.

He said, “We continue to pray for peace, to bring peace into our families, communities, and wherever we live. Each of us should dedicate ourselves to being instruments of peace.”

“Let us continue spreading peace so that the world may experience true peace and human hearts may be transformed,” the Kenyan Catholic Church leader said during the Chesegon peace event, which is part of the North Rift Peace Initiative that members of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) launched in June 2023.

Meanwhile, the KCCB has released a prayer for the victims of the October 31 landslide, imploring God to grant eternal rest to those who lost their lives and consolation to grieving families.

The Kenya Catholic Bishops, in their prayer that The Catholic Mirror published on its social media page on November 5, also pray for the injured, that God’s “healing hand may restore their strength and comfort their pain.”

Here is the KCCB prayer for the victims of the Kerio Valley landslide:

Loving and Merciful God,

We come before You with heavy hearts, mourning our brothers and sisters who lost their lives in the landslide in Kerio Valley.

Grant eternal rest to those who have died may perpetual light shine upon them, and may they find peace in Your loving embrace.

We pray for the injured, Lord, that Your healing hand may restore their strength and comfort their pain. Console the grieving families and friends with the hope of the Resurrection, and surround them with Your compassion and the support of their community. In moments of loss and uncertainty, help us trust in Your divine providence. Turn our sorrow into solidarity and our fear into faith. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
