Young people must take the lead in transforming society by rejecting bribery, lies, manipulation, and disregard for life, Bishop Ildo Augusto dos Santos Lopes Fortes of Cape Verde’s Diocese of Mindelo has said.

Addressing hundreds of young people during the closing Mass of the Jubilee of the youths in the country, which was organized as part of the ongoing Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year, Bishop dos Santos called for a courageous, active mission rooted in truth, justice, and the defense of life.

“Christ calls every young person to an active mission marked by truth, justice, and the defense of life… Today’s world needs Christians who are not afraid to bear witness to their faith and who understand that Christian life is not passive but a path of responsibility before God, society, and the most vulnerable,” he said during the November 23 event that was held at Our Lady of Light Cathedral of Mindelo Diocese.

He added, “Christ does not call us to a life asleep, but to a concrete mission.”

Bishop dos Santos encouraged young people to be “protagonists of change,” not only through words but through daily actions that reflect moral coherence and Christian fidelity.

According to the Catholic Church leader, “the mission of young people requires firm and transparent choices in a time when many temptations seek to mislead conscience and weaken essential values.”

He reminded the youths that the Christian path never legitimizes practices that harm human dignity or “compromise the soul just to obtain immediate advantages.”

Bishop dos Santos said that “a Christian young person must firmly reject any form of complicity with these practices, even when this brings difficulties or misunderstandings.”

For him, fidelity to the truth is an indispensable condition for anyone who wants to build the common good.

The Catholic Bishop noted that the celebration of the Jubilee should not be seen as an isolated festive moment, but as the beginning of a path that must continue in families, parishes, youth groups, and in the social spaces where young people live.”

He encouraged young people to carry to their communities the commitment to live according to Christ and “to witness the Gospel with simplicity and firmness.”

Bishop dos Santos assured the young people that Christ does not abandon those who choose to follow Him sincerely.

He reminded them that faith does not eliminate challenges but gives strength to face them with hope.

“It is worth being Catholic to the end,” he said, and stressed that following Christ is a source of joy, meaning, and mission.
