Bishop Michael Miabesue Bibi of the Catholic Diocese of Buea has expressed “deep sorrow” following the tragic fuel tanker explosion that struck the Likomba neighborhood in Tiko early Friday, December 12, leaving eight people dead and several others injured.

In a statement shared with ACI Africa, Bishop Bibi appeals for prayers and solidarity with the victims and their families.

In the December 12 statement issued shortly after the tragedy, the Cameroonian Catholic Bishop says he received the news “with a deeply saddened heart,” describing the incident—which occurred near St. Martin de Porres Parish, Likomba 0f Buea Diocese—as devastating for the entire community.

“According to information from the Senior Divisional Officer for Fako, Mr. Viang Makala, the tragedy resulted from a mechanical failure involving a fuel tanker whose brakes malfunctioned. This led to a collision with other vehicles, followed by a devastating explosion,” Bishop Bibi says.

He adds, “At the time of this message, three persons who sustained severe injuries are receiving medical treatment. Sadly, eight lives have been lost. In addition, eight vehicles were completely damaged, and ten houses were destroyed in the fire.”

“On behalf of the Diocese of Buea, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. We join them in their sorrow and assure them of our fervent prayers,” Bishop Bibi says.

He calls on all Diocesan communities to “prayerfully commend the souls of the departed to the mercy of God, that He may grant them eternal rest.”

“May the Lord, in His compassion, bring healing to the wounded, comfort to the bereaved, and strength to all survivors during this painful and challenging time. May Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, console His people and restore hope to all affected by this tragedy,” Bishop Bibi implores.
