Catholic Vicariate of Rodrigues in Mauritius Has a New Apostolic Administrator

Fr. Luc René Young Chen Yin, a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of the Vicariate Apostolic of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius by Pope Francis Monday, January 4.

The Catholic Vicariate of Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean Island nation of Mauritius has a new Apostolic Administrator, Fr. Luc René Young Chen Yin.

Pope Francis appointed the member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) Monday, January 4.

Fr. Luc’s appointment was published by the leadership of the Vicariate Apostolic.

The ecclesiastical territory has been vacant since September 2020 when Bishop Alain Harel was transferred to the Diocese of Port Victoria in Seychelles.

Maurice Cardinal Piat appointed Fr. Jean Maurice Labor to temporarily administrator the Apostolic Vicariate in October 2020 following Bishop Harel’s transfer.

Born on the Island of Rodrigues in August 1960, Fr. Luc left for Calcutta in India as an aspirant of the Missionary Brothers of Charity in 1984. Months later, he joined the OMI and began his formation to the Priesthood. 

He was ordained a Priest in February 1992. Since then, Fr. Luc has served in various positions including Parish Priest, ministry among street families, prisoners and foreign domestic workers in Hong Kong, China.

Since 2008, the member of OMI has been ministering among disabled orphans, abandoned children and workers from poor villages in China.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Rodrigues, which measures 40 square miles was erected from the Diocese of Port-Louis in October 2002. It has a population of 38,714 Catholics, according to 2017 statistics
