Late Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa.

Ugandans have eulogized the late Bishop John Baptist Kaggwa who died Wednesday, January 20 at the age of 77 as a zealous, humble and one who empowered the community.

The Bishop emeritus of Masaka Diocese succumbed to COVID-19-related complications at the Mulago Referral Hospital in Uganda’s capital, Kampala

“The Bishop had previously suffered from coronavirus but he had been cured. However, he had to remain in the hospital as he was still weak and he was experiencing some breathing difficulties,” the Communications Director of Masaka Diocese, Fr. Ronald Mayanja told ACI Africa Thursday, January 21.

He added, “We are really in agony for the loss of our dear Bishop.”

“Sometimes, the Bishop would have many engagements in a day. But he would ensure that he attends to everything in his program without complaining,” Fr. Mayanja said, recalling the late Bishop who was ordained as Coadjutor Bishop of Masaka Diocese in June 1995, later becoming the Local Ordinary of the Ugandan Diocese in January 1998. He retired in April 2019 aged 76.

Fr. Mayanja went on to describe the late Ugandan Bishop as one who empowered members of the community in the Diocese of Masaka without segregation.

“Whenever he travelled to Europe and America, he would get some funds. He then put the money into the Diocesan Development Organization,” the Ugandan Cleric told ACI Africa January 21 and added, “The Bishop would also give out cows to different people without segregation of tribe or religion.”

Born in 1943, the late Prelate was ordained a Priest in 1971. He succeeded Bishop Adrian Kivumbi Ddungu.

In his 21-year tenure as Local Ordinary of Masaka Diocese, the late Bishop facilitated the construction of Our Lady of Sorrows Kitovu Cathedral, “put up a Bursary scheme called Bishop Kaggwa Bursary Scheme so he would support less privileged students,” Fr. Mayanja said, adding that Bishop Kaggwa wanted “ensure children within Masaka Diocese receive education.”

For Seminarian Lawrence Ssebanakitta who was installed as a Lector and Acolyte by the Prelate, Bishop Kaggwa was a prayerful person.
