A Catholic Priest serving in Uganda’s Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese has been stabbed to death reportedly over a land dispute.

Fr. Josephat Kasambula, 68, was murdered on Wednesday, August 18 at Lukunyu Village in Gomba District, Uganda’s Daily Monitor has reported.

“Fr Kasambula was stabbed to death by someone who had encroached on his 15-acre piece of land,” the Thursday, August 18 report indicates.

In the report, a resident of Mamba landing site, Mr. Sam Kalule, has been quoted as saying, “When the man of God arrived at his farm, he found when the man had occupied the house on the farm.”

The Catholic Priest, Mr. Kalule says, inquired from the man “how he came to the farm and had no answer.”

“The Priest ordered the people who had accompanied him to enter the house and throw out everything, but as they entered, the Priest and the suspect remained outside and the latter pounced on the Priest and stabbed him in the back, killing him instantly,” Mr. Kalule has been quoted as recounting the events of August 18.

According to the Mr. Kalule, the suspect who fled the scene of crime “must have been under the influence of marijuana since he is a known drug addict.”

The chairperson of Uganda’s Kyegonza Sub County has been quoted as saying that the late “Fr. Kasambula had owned the farm for over 20 years but had taken long without visiting it.”

“The suspect, who is a born of this area, took advantage of the priest not regularly visiting his farm and occupied the house. He has also been planting seasonal crops like maize and beans and selling them without the knowledge of the owner,” Joseph Sseyuya has been quoted as saying.

He added in relation to the murdered Catholic Priest, “We are saddened by the death of a Priest and we pray that the suspect is arrested and be brought to book.”
