Prayers are being sought for the safe release of an American Catholic Nun reportedly abducted from Burkina Faso’s Kaya Diocese on the night of Monday, April 4.

In a statement issued Tuesday, April 5, the Local Ordinary of Kaya Diocese, Bishop Théophile Nare shares about the abduction of Sr. Suellen Tennyson, a member of the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross, aged 83.

“On the night of Monday 4 to Tuesday 5 April 2022, Unidentified Armed Men (UAM) visited the community of nuns in Yalgo Parish of the Diocese of Kaya. They abducted Sister Suellen Tennyson, from the Congregation of Marianite Sisters of the Holy Cross,” Bishop Nare says in the statement shared with ACI Africa.

The Catholic Bishop adds, “Sr. Suellen Tennyson was taken to an unknown destination by her kidnappers who, before leaving, vandalized rooms (and) damaged the community vehicle, which they attempted to take with them.”

“Until the search for her is successful, we remain in communion of prayer for the release of Sr. Suellen Tennyson,” Bishop Nare implores.

The Burkinabe Catholic Bishop continues, “We also pray for her sisters, for her congregation, as well as for the pastoral agents and the faithful of Yalgo Parish located some 110 kilometers from Kaya, the capital of the Centre-North Region.”

Sr. Tennyson has been serving in the Catholic Diocese of Kaya since October 2014.

Burkina Faso, one of the ten countries in the Sahel region, has been facing rampant violence occasioned by political crises, which offer a fertile ground for the proliferation of extremist groups such as the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jama’at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin.
