Officials of the Order of St. Augustine (OSA/Augustinians) have announced the passing on of their confrere, the former Bishop of Nigeria’s Maiduguri Diocese, and implored that his soul rests “in the peace of the Risen Lord”.

“We are sad to inform you that Bishop Louis Senan O'Donnell OSA passed away peacefully last night after a short stay in St Michael's Hospital,” Augustinian officials say about Bishop Senan Loius O’Donnell who died at health facility in Ireland on Wednesday, April 12 aged 96.

“May Louis rest now in the peace of the Risen Lord,” OSA officials say in reference to their confrere who served as the second Catholic Bishop Maiduguri Diocese.

In a separate statement announcing the passing on of the Irish-born Catholic Bishop who was at the helm of the Nigerian Diocese since Episcopal Consecration in November 1993 until he retired in February 2003, the Vicar General of Maiduguri, Fr. Donatus Tizhe, says the Nigerian Diocese “will in due course organize a Holy Mass. Please remember him in your daily prayers.”

Born in February 1927 in Ireland’s Scattery Island, the late Bishop was ordained an Augustinian Priest in July 1955.

In September 1993, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Maiduguri. When he retired in February 2003 at the age of 76, he was succeeded by Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, who was later transferred to Nigeria’s Kaduna Archdiocese.

In Bishop O'Donnell’s near-decade episcopacy, the Catholic population in Maiduguri Diocese recorded a laudable increase, from 99,130 in 1999 to 103,000 in 2003, according to Catholic hierarchy statistics.

In the same duration, the number of Diocesan Priests increased from 23 to 28.
