Rector of Christ the King Major Seminary in Angola Appointed Bishop of Sumbe Diocese

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Firmino David who has been serving as Rector of Christ the King Major Seminary Huambo in Angola as the Bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Sumbe in the Southern African nation. 

The appointment of Mons. David as Local Ordinary of the Angolan Diocese that has been vacant since September 2021 when Archbishop Luzizila Kiala was transferred to Malanje Archdiocese was made public Thursday, May 4 by the Holy See Press Office

Born in April 1963 in Sasalakata in the Catholic Archdiocese of Lubango, Mons. David was ordained a Priest for the Catholic Diocese of Huambo in April 1991.

He has served as the Vice-Chancellor of the Curia, Parish Vicar, Parish Priest of St. Anthony and Nuno Parish of Huambo Archdiocese, and Spiritual Director of the Archdiocesan Minor Seminary. 

The holder of a licentiate and doctorate in Canon Law from the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome has also served as a member of the College of Consultors and Judicial Vicar.

When ordained a Bishop, Mons. David is expected to serve as the fourth Local Ordinary of the Angolan Diocese that was erected in August 1975. 

It is part of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Luanda and has a population of 649,022 Catholics, according to 2021 statistics.
