Catholic Bishop in Nigeria Hailed for “selfless service” on Episcopal Anniversary

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has been lauded for his “selfless service” to the people of God in the West African nation since he was Consecrated Bishop 12 years ago.

In a Friday, September 8 tribute, representatives of the Diocese of Sokoto also honor the Catholic Church leader for his “unwavering commitment”.

“Throughout the years, you have tirelessly shepherded the flock, leading by example and spreading God's love,” they say, and add, “Thank you for your selfless service and for being a beacon of light in our lives. We are grateful for your steadfast presence and the countless lives you have touched.”

The representatives of Sokoto Diocese acknowledge with gratitude the member of the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development (DPIHD) who was consecrated on 8 September 2011 for impacting the lives of the people of God. 

They say that the Catholic Church leader who has been vocal about injustices and advocated for good governance in Nigeria has “touched the hearts of many, and your compassion has uplifted those in need” through his teachings.

“On this joyous occasion, we celebrate and honor your dedicated service to our faith community. Your unwavering commitment, wisdom, and guidance have been a source of inspiration for all of us,” they say.

The representatives of the Nigerian Diocese offer their "heartfelt prayers" for Bishop Kukah's "continued strength, health, and wisdom." 

"May God's grace continue to guide you as you lead, inspire, and nurture our community, nation, and the world community. Your unwavering faith and dedication are truly an inspiration to us all," they say.

In their September 8 Facebook tribute, the representatives of Sokoto Diocese implore, "May this anniversary be a reminder of the impact you have made and the lives you have touched. We are blessed to have you as our shepherd."

Bishop Kukah, who celebrated his 71st birthday on August 31 was ordained a Priest for Nigeria's Archdiocese of Kaduna in December 1976.
