Salesians Empower Youth in “digital skills for employment" Initiative in Nigerian Centre

The Salesian Centre in Ibadan, Nigeria, has received equipment to help equip youths with digital skills in an initiative that seeks to address youth unemployment described as “digital skills for employment”.

In a Monday, September 25 report shared with ACI Africa, members of the Religious Institute of the Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB) acknowledge the partnership of their US-based development arm, Salesian Missions.

"The project known as 'Provision of Vocational Skills for Young Girls & Boys for the Improvement of Livelihoods' has provided 31 desktop computers, six laptops, software, computer table and chairs, among other items," Salesian officials say.

They add, "The new computer lab will accommodate more youth and allow them to learn digital skills for employment."

SDB members involved in the initiative further say that before receiving the new equipment, the Salesian Center Ibadan had only four computers for use by some 200 students, teachers and other members of staff.

“We aim to negate the impacts of unemployment and underemployment on the teeming number of young people in Nigeria,” a Salesian official is quoted as saying in the September 25 report. 

The official adds, “As the world evolves, most organizations, businesses, and companies have gone through a certain degree of digital transformation. The digital age is expanding into all areas of human existence, and it is not just those who work in the information technology world that need to be alert of this change. Digital skills are highly valued and will be very vital in the future.”

The Salesian centre in Ibadan was established in 2002 to offer educational and social services to disadvantaged young people.

The centre that hosts an Institute of Philosophy with 200 students also has a youth center that is visited by 500 youth each day, an oratory where 100 youth visit each day, and a child protection home with 40 children, SDB officials say in the report. 

They add that the center also offers an outreach program for street children, who cannot be accommodated in the child protection home.
