Pope Francis Appoints Bishops for Two Catholic Dioceses in Tanzania

Pope Francis has appointed new Bishops for the Catholic Dioceses of Bukoba and Njombe in Tanzania.

The appointments of Mons. Jovitus Francis Mwijage and Mons. Eusebio Samwel Kyando for the Dioceses of Bukoba and Njombe, respectively, was made public by the Holy See Press Office on Thursday, October 19.

Bukoba Diocese has been vacant since October 2022 when Bishop Desiderius M. Rwoma retired. 

Bishop Method Kilaini, the Auxiliary Bishop, has been serving as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese since then. 

Mons. Mwijage, a native of Bukoba where he was born in December 1966, is the National Executive Director of the Union of Catholic Priests in Tanzania (UMAWATA).

He is also a member of the Regional Council of Seminaries in Tanzania and the International Economic Committee of the Pontifical Mission Societies.

Bishop-elect Mwijage studied philosophy at the Ntungamo Major Seminary in Bukoba and theology at the Segerea Senior Seminary in Dar-es-Salaam.

He was ordained a Clergy for Bukoba Diocese in July 1997.

Folliwing his ordination, Mons. Mwijage served as the Assistant Parish Priest of Our Lady of Good Counsel Mwemage Parish. He later served as Professor of Ecclesiastical History at St. Charles Lwanga Senior Seminary Segerea and the National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Tanzania.

Mons. Mwijage will serve as the fifth Bishop of the 8,680-square-kilometer Diocese that is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Mwanza once he is consecrated.

The Holy Father has also appointed Mons. Kyanda as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Njombe.

The Tanzanian Diocese which is part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Songea fell vacant in April 2021 following the death of Bishop Alfred Leonhard Malume.

Bishop John Chrisostom Ndimbo of Mbinga Diocese has been serving as the Apostolic Administrator of Njombe. 

Born in March 1964 in Njombe, Bishop-elect Kyanda attended St. Augustine Major Seminary Peramiho in Tanzania’s Archdiocese of Songea for his philosophical and theological studies. 

The alumnus of Australia’s University of Tasmania and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan was ordained a Priest for Njombe Diocese in June 1996.

Bishop-elect Kyanda has been serving as the representative of the Apostolic Administrator of Njombe since 2021.

 He has previously served as an Assistant Parish Priest, Finance Officer, and Treasury back officer at Mkombozi Commercial Bank, among others. 

Once he is consecrated a Bishop, Mons. Kyanda will serve as the third Local Ordinary of the Tanzanian Diocese erected in February 1968.
