The Vatican Secretary of State has lauded the “peaceful and respectful coexistence” between Muslims and Christians in the West African nation of Senegal.

Addressing journalists on December 10, the last of his four-day visit to the West African nation for the consecration of the National Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Deliverance in Popenguine, Pietro Cardinal Parolin encouraged the Senegalese people to continue fostering fraternity.

“I would like to thank all of you, civil and ecclesiastical authorities, from the bottom of my heart, and wish your country a glorious future enlightened by human brotherhood, enriched by the spirituality of each religious denominations, a peaceful and respectful coexistence of Muslims and Christians,” Cardinal Parolin said during the press conference in Senegal’s capital city, Dakar.

He added, “The capital, Dakar, with all its symbolic but real responsibilities has the well-known characteristic of respect and peaceful coexistence among the Senegalese, with a view to consolidating democracy and cultivating ‘teranga’, understood as hospitality and human generosity.”

Cardinal Parolin encouraged the Senegalese people to “overcome all adversity and divisions that may threaten them, by seeking universal brotherhood.”

In his homily during the consecration of the Marian shrine of Popenguine in the Archdiocese of Dakar on December 9, the Vatican Secretary of State called upon the people of God to cultivate an “unshakeable faith in God, in the image of the Virgin Mary, for the hope of a life filled with grace.”

“We are all filled with joy because we are celebrating the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today, our joy is even greater because we have come to consecrate her home, the Marian shrine of Popenguine,” the Italian-born Cardinal said.

He added, “The Church continues to carry out its mission with conviction and modesty, through the work and immense, constant dedication of the many pastoral agents, Priests, Religious Men and women, and lay people.”

During his visit to Senegal, the Vatican Secretary of State visited Gorée, an island off the coast of Dakar, which is home to a former slave house.

Following in the footsteps of the Pope St. John Paul II, who visited the island during his trip to Senegal in 1992, Cardinal Parolin called upon the people of God to remain “attentive” and “vigilant''/

He added, “The human heart is capable of great gestures of generosity and heroism, but also of atrocities and suffering.”

“These contradictions are for all of us a warning of human fragility and teach us to remain attentive and vigilant, in order to guarantee the precious gift of peace which is the fruit of justice, truth and love,” Cardinal Parolin said.
