Entertainment Activities Planned in Zambian Catholic Archdiocese Suspended as World Mourns Pope Francis’ Passing On

The Catholic Archdiocese of Ndola in Zambia has declared a period of mourning following the passing on of Pope Francis, and suspended major activities it had lined up before the Easter Monday news was made public.

In a Tuesday, April 22 statement, the Archdiocese of Ndola’s Pastoral Director, Fr. Ephraim Mulenga Mapulanga, said that as a way of mourning and “showing respect to our late Holy Father”, the Archdiocese’s Pastoral Office had directed that fun activities, planned pilgrimages, rallies and commissioning events in the Zambian Archdiocese be suspended for a while.

Fr. Mapulanga said that the pastoral office had seen fit “that all programs of entertainment be suspended in all our parishes and institutions.”

“These activities include, singing festivals, social entertainments, Fundraising Braais and other related activities,” Fr. Mapulanga said.

He directed that on Saturday, April 26, the day of Pope Francis’ burial, all Parishes, Lay groups, movements, organizations and institutions of the Archdiocese of Ndola push all the major activities that were scheduled to take place to a later date.

“We are all encouraged to pray for the late Holy Father as we celebrate our Masses,” the Catholic Priest said, and added, “During Eucharistic celebrations, the part where we mention the name of the Pope should be omitted. We should just mention the name of the Archbishop, until such a time when we shall have a new Pope.”

“Let us continue to be united as a local church as we pray for the repose of the soul of our Holy Father, Pope Francis,” he said.

Other Episcopal Sees across Africa have issued directives in their respective Dioceses, encouraging special prayers for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Pretoria in South Africa has announced that there will be special Eucharistic celebrations on Friday, April 25, on Saturday, April 26, and on Sunday, April 27 to pray for the soul of Pope Francis.

In an April 22 Facebook post,  Archbishop Dhabula Anthony Mpako of the Catholic Archdiocese of Pretoria in South Africa says that on April 25, a Requiem Mass for Pope Francis will be celebrated at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 10 a.m. local time.

The Archdiocese of Pretoria has further announced that on April 27, all Eucharistic celebrations in all the Parishes and institutions in the South African Metropolitan See are to be offered for the intention of late Pope Francis.

The South African Archbishop has further called for prayers for the events that are to follow Pope Francis’ burial, saying, “Let us pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit for the process of the election of a new pope which will begin soon.”
