On the occasion of the annual Africa Day marked on May 25, Africa’s Catholic Bishops are calling upon the people of God on the continent and its islands to participate in building up “Africa we want” as “architects”.

In a statement issued Sunday, May 25, members of the Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) welcome the African Union’s (AU) 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, and describe it as a timely appeal to address the longstanding injustice Africans face across the globe.

“We will never cease to reiterate our concern for the urgent challenges facing our continent and its lovely people, including injustice, terrorism, conflict, poverty, issues of education, healthcare, dialogue, inter-religious dialogue, ecology, refugees and displaced people, Human trafficking,” Africa’s Catholic Bishops say in the message that SECAM President, Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo, signed.

Referring to a 2019 report that the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights issued, Catholic Bishops in Africa lament, “Contemporary conflict and crises (in Africa) have forced millions of people – men, women and children – to flee in order to escape suffering, human rights violations and starvation. And, unfortunately, vulnerable groups, especially women and children, suffer the most egregious human rights abuses in conflict.”

Against this backdrop, Africa’s Catholic Bishops invite citizens on the continent to be “architects of the Africa we want, a better Africa, made up with joy and hope.”

They emphasize the Catholic Church’s commitment to promoting justice, peace, and the dignity of all people in Africa, particularly the poor and marginalized.

“As Catholic Church, Family of God in Africa, we trust that African Leaders will very care of the appeals and pastoral exhortations of Pope Leo XIV, following in the footsteps of his predecessor Pope Francis, is reinforcing the Church’s commitment to justice,  peace, and the dignity of all the peoples, particularly the poor, the marginalized, and those suffering the consequences of conflict, inequality, and neglect,” SECAM members say.

They recall the “prophetic message”, which the late Pope Francis delivered during his pastoral visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan in January/February 2023, saying, “Hands off Africa! Stop choking Africa: it is not a mine to be stripped or a terrain to be plundered. May Africa be the protagonist of its own destiny!”

“May it be spoken of more frequently, and have greater weight and prestige among the nations,” Africa’s Catholic Bishops implore, noting that the Justice, Peace and Development Commission (JPDC) of SECAM, together with its Liaison Office in Addis Ababa, continue to advocate for justice and peace at national, continental, and global levels.

They further note that participating in the February 27-28 workshop that took place at the African Union Commission (AUC) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, under the theme, “The Role of Faith Communities and Ethical Organizations in Advancing  Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations”, SECAM-JPDC “launched an  important appeal to the world for the reparation of the damage caused to the Africans and People of African Descent.”

They urge African and world leaders, including individual persons, to “mobilize and work for justice and human rights, while combating all forms of discrimination, economic exploitation, illegal exploitation of natural and mineral resources, inhuman and degrading treatment, emotional trauma, and all kinds of suffering endured by Africans.”

“Let us all, as ‘Pilgrims of Hope’, promote and protect every single life, reduce poverty, take care of ‘Our Common Home’ – the Earth – building Bridges for Peace and Hope everywhere on the  African continent and beyond,” Africa’s Catholic Bishops say referring to the theme of the ongoing Catholic Church’s 2025 Jubilee Year and the late Pope Francis’ 24 May 2015 Encyclical Letter on care for our common home, Laudato Si’.

Celebrated annually on May 25, Africa Day commemorates the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), currently the African Union (AU).
