Pope Leo XIV has called on members of the Southern African Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC) to build on and sustain the heritage of the early missionaries whose zeal and commitment to spreading the Gospel were instrumental in shaping the Church in the region.

In a message delivered on his behalf by the Apostolic Nuncio in South Africa, Archbishop Henryk Mieczysław Jagodziński, during the opening Eucharistic celebration for the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Southern African ecclesiastical hierarchy, the Holy Father underscored the vital role played by successive generations of missionaries in building strong and vibrant local communities of faith.

“Take this opportunity to commemorate those whose missionary spirit and dedication to proclaiming the Good News helped shape the Church in your land over these decades,” the Holy Father said at the Sunday, January 25, celebration that South Africa’s Catholic Archdiocese of Pretoria hosted at the Church of the Beatitudes, Zwavelpoort.

He added, “Indeed, evangelization is first and foremost God’s work, born of a personal encounter with Jesus Christ, from which authentic missionary discipleship flows.”

The Holy Father encouraged the SACBC members, who include Catholic Bishops in Botswana, Eswatini, and South Africa, to continue the early missionaries’ “legacy of being leaven in society, transforming it from within through daily lives permeated by the Gospel.”

“In this way, you will surely bear witness, with closeness, humility, and unity, to the transformative love of Christ in families and communities, within digital spaces, across mission territories, and amid the complex realities of the contemporary world,” Pope Leo XIV said.

Meanwhile, in his address at the January 25 Holy Mass, Archbishop Jagodziński described the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the ecclesiastical hierarchy as a moment for renewed commitment and a testimony to a Church that has grown and matured in faith.

“This anniversary is not only a celebration of the past but also a moment of renewed commitment to the future,” the Vatican diplomat said and added, “It testifies to a Church that has matured in faith, grown in responsibility, and remained attentive to the cries and hopes of the people she serves.”

He hailed the Clergy, members of Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life (ICLSA), and the Laity for their contribution to the growth of the Church in the region, saying, “Your shared witness is a precious gift to the Church and to society as a whole.”

Archbishop Jagodziński expressed the hope that the 75th anniversary would rekindle in all the faithful the joy of the Gospel and inspire them with the courage to journey together as missionary disciples.

More in Africa

“May the Church in Southern Africa continue to be a sign of hope, reconciliation, and peace, and a living testimony to the transforming love of Christ,” the Apostolic Nuncio in South Africa said during the January 25 Holy Mass presided over by the SACBC President Stephen Cardinal Brislin.

Cardinal Brislin, who is also the Local Ordinary of the Catholic Archdiocese of Johannesburg, has described the anniversary as “a milestone that invites gratitude for the past, honest reflection on hard-won struggles, and renewed hope for the future.”

“It’s something that we must truly be very grateful for today, that we do have that structure that has enabled the Church to grow and certainly enabled good pastoral care of people in their various Dioceses and Parishes,” Cardinal Brislin said during an interview with the Communications Officer of the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SACBC), Sheila Leocádia Pires.

Pope Pius XII founded the Southern African Hierarchy on 11 January 1951.
