Major Seminary Rector Appointed Bishop for Mali’s Catholic Diocese of Sikasso

Pope Francis has appointed the Rector of St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Bamako, Mali, as the Bishop for the country’s Sikasso Diocese.

The appointment of Mons. Robert Cissé was published by the Holy See Press Office on Wednesday, December 14.

Situated in the Southern region of the landlocked West African nation, Sikasso Diocese has been vacant since the March 2020 transfer of Bishop Jean-Baptiste Tiama to the Diocese of Mopti.

Born in July 1968 in Bamako Archdiocese, the alumnus of St. Augustine's Major Seminary and St. Peter Claver Major Seminary in Koumi, Burkina Faso, where he had his initial Priestly formation in philosophy and theology respectively was ordained a Priest in July 1993 for Sikasso Diocese. 

As a Priest, Mons. Cissé has served in various capacities, including Assistant Parish Priest, Parish Priest, head of the Diocesan Commission for Vocations, Laity Chaplain, and lecturer at St. Pius XII Minor Seminary in Bamako.

He also served as head of the Diocesan Commission for Education, National Director of the Pontifical Missionary Society (PMS), Vicar General, Member of the Council for Economic Affairs, Secretary General of the Union of Priests in Mali, and Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the Catholic University of West Africa (UCAO).

The Malian-born Bishop-elect holds a Licentiate in Philosophy from the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome.

Once ordained Bishop, Mons. Cissé is expected to shepherd the people of God in the 47,950 square kilometer Diocese with an estimated population of 41,100 Catholics, according to 2020 statistics

Established in June 1947 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Sikasso from the Apostolic Vicariate of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, the Malian Episcopal See was elevated to a Diocese in July 1963. 

Sikasso Diocese is one of the five suffragan Episcopal Sees of Bamako Metropolitan See.
