The new Parish Priest of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Nhamatand Parish of Mozambique’s Beira Archdiocese has been encouraged to foster communion with the people of God under his pastoral care.

In his Sunday, January 14 homily during the installation of Fr. António Ticaqui Augusto as Parish Priest, the Local Ordinary of the Mozambican Metropolitan See, Archbishop Claudio Dalla Zuanna underscored the need for Parish Priests to spend time with the faithful, helping them discern the voice of God.

“It is good for the Parish Priest to spend more time in the communities to get to know the people and to be able to help move people, families, youth movements forward and to be able to make progress in a parish,” Archbishop Zuanna said.

He added, “The Priest's job within a parish is to show where Jesus goes, where he is, and then not just to know where he is, but to follow him.”

“Parish Priest has the job of encouraging the faithful to listen and respond to the Lord's call,” the Argentine member of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCI) further said.

He emphasized the need for collaboration, saying that for pastoral work to be successful in a Parish setting, “it is necessary for the Parish Priest and the faithful to work together.”

“A Priest alone in a parish won't get things done. If parishioners don't take the initiative, if we don't go to where Jesus is, the Priest can speak, give a homily, give advice, we won't succeed,” the Archbishop of Beira cautioned, adding, “The parish won't move forward; we need to go to Jesus, listen to his word, do as he teaches.”

The Local Ordinary of Beira since his Episcopal Consecration in October 2012 further cautioned, “The parish won't grow just because of the Priest's good qualities; it will grow with everyone's involvement and commitment to bringing more people to Jesus.”
