Late Bishop Sebastião Soares de Resende, the pioneer Local Ordinary of Mozambique’s Beira Archdiocese, has been remembered as a “dedicated pastor”, who had the best interests of the people of God under his pastoral care.

In his homily during the memorial Mass of the 56th death anniversary of the native of Portugal, Archbishop Claudio Dalla Zuanna said, “If we look at our dioceses, especially here in the Archdiocese of Beira, our churches were almost all built with the effort and participation of Bishop Soares de Resende.”

The late Bishop was a “dedicated pastor who faithfully dedicated his life to the service of the people of God,” Archbishop Zuanna said during the January 21 Eucharistic celebration at Our Lady of Fatima Parish of Beira Archdiocese.

“We also often talk about the need for a new Cathedral, because the one we have is small. Bishop Soares de Resende was also thinking about this, and he had even found a place for it, which has since been lost to events and time. But he always said that the work on the other parishes should go ahead first,” the Argentine member of the Congregation of the Priests of the Sacred Heart (SCI) further said.

The Catholic Archbishop of Beira also acknowledged with appreciation the messages Bishop Soares de Resende had for the people of God.

He said, “It's not just his works; it's also his teachings, the words he used to say; every year he wrote a long pastoral letter. They were rich texts that taught the way of life and today they have been compiled into a book titled, ‘Dom Sebastião the Prophet.’”

Archbishop Zuanna continued, “As we celebrate the life of this great man of God, let us strive to emulate his example of working tirelessly for the growth of the Church.”

“Let us pray for him and all other pastors who have served in the Local Church,” he implored.

Born in July 1906 in Milheirós de Poiares, Portugal, late Bishop Soares de Resende was ordained a Priest for Portugal’s Porto Diocese in October 1928.

The late Catholic Church leader, who had a doctorate in Philosophy and a licentiate in Theology started his Episcopal Ministry as the pioneer Bishop of Beira Diocese in August 1943.
