Bishop Vicente Carlos Kiaziku of the Catholic Diocese of Mbanza Congo in Angola  has called upon the five Deacons he ordained in his Episcopal See to prioritize the needy in the community during their Diaconate and Priestly ministry.

In his homily during the Diaconate Ordination of Seminarians Pascoal Emília, Pedro Vuvu, Kiamuanga Ambrósio, Tiago Pambi and José Francisco, Bishop Kiaziku emphasized the fostering of “true charity” in the example of Jesus Christ.

“Dear candidates, the challenges for Deacons are the mediation of love that has no measure, that is, true charity, charity based on the way of Christ, which should lead you to be very attentive to the needs of all, both spiritual and material,” he said during the April 28 Ordination event at Our Lady of the Conception Parish of Mbanza Congo Diocese.

The Catholic Bishop highlighted the needy in society, and urged the five candidates he was to ordain Deacons “especially to care for the sick and the poor.”

He went on to highlight other traits that should characterize their ministry as Deacons, urging them “to have modest authority, perfect rectitude, docility to the Holy Spirit, to live the joy of consecration, to listen to the Word of God that is faithfully proclaimed, and to show love for Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of vocations.”

“The Deacons who collaborate with the Bishops and Priests receive the first degree of the Sacrament of Orders and are ordained ministers for the service of the Church,” the Angolan member of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (OFM Cap) further said.

When Deacons receive this first degree, he said, “they become clerics, and there are certain duties and one of them is that of prayer. Priests and Deacons are obliged to pray the liturgy of the hours daily, according to the proper and approved liturgical books.”

“Let's not imitate men who also have their faults,” Bishop Kiaziku said, and appealed, “Be firm in the communities where you are sent; be promoters of community prayer.”

He recognized the response to God’s calling of the five candidates he was to ordain Deacons, describing them as “a great gift from the Lord”.

“With deep joy and sincere affection, I greet and thank these young men who are determined and strong in the Lord. I greet and thank their parents, family, friends, and acquaintances present here,” the Local Ordinary of Mbanza Congo Diocese since his Episcopal Consecration in March 2009 said.

In a vote of thanks by newly ordained Deacon Kiamuanga Ambrósio, the Deacons thanked all those who “prayed to God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit” for them to reach “this milestone.”

They asked the people of God to “continue praying” for them to “remain faithful and generous in the service of God on behalf of His people, as true collaborators.”
