Members of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) have eulogized the late Pope Francis as “a fearless leader” who committed himself to establishing a Synodal church.

In a message addressed to the Vatican's Secretary of State, Pietro Cardinal Parolini, the AMECEA chairman, Bishop Charles Sampa Kasonde, also expressed the association’s deep sorrow following the passing on of Pope Francis.

“Pope Francis was an inspiration to the Universal Church, and in AMECEA, we will always remember him as a humble, wise, and fearless leader whose enduring legacy included his passion for a Synodal Church,” Bishop Kasonde said in the April 21 message.

The Synod on Synodality, initiated by Pope Francis on 10 October 2021, represents a significant endeavor to foster a more inclusive and participatory Catholic Church. Running from 2021 to 2024, the Synodal process was structured into distinct phases, each aimed at engaging various levels of the Church community.

The Diocesan phase, which ran from October 2021 – April 2022, focused on local consultations, encouraging dioceses worldwide to engage Clergy and laity in dialogues about the Church's mission and challenges. The feedback collected was synthesized into national reports, reflecting the diverse experiences and insights of the faithful.

The Continental Phase, which ran from September 2022 – March 2023, focused on the diocesan findings. This phase involved regional assemblies across continents. The gatherings were aimed at discerning common themes and priorities, culminating in continental synthesis documents that informed the subsequent universal phase.

The universal phase commenced with a Synodal assembly at the Vatican on 4 October 2023, following a preparatory retreat. The assembly concluded on 27 October 2024, with Pope Francis choosing to ratify and publish the final Synodal document, rather than issuing a post-Synodal apostolic exhortation.

In the April 21 condolence message, the AMECEA chairman says that the late Pontiff will also be remembered for his advocacy for peace, dialogue, and reconciliation, which inspired hope in countries and communities affected by conflicts.

Bishop Kasonde further lauded Pope Francis’ environmental stewardship through his encyclical "Laudato Si'” and option for the poor and marginalized, including refugees and migrants; ecumenical and interfaith dialogue, which he said are crucial for peace and harmony in Africa's multireligious society.

On visiting Africa, the AMECEA chairman said, “His Holiness Pope Francis made several visits to the Church in the AMECEA region, including Kenya, Uganda, and South Sudan, during which he not only came out as a centre of unity for Bishops but also a beacon of faith, God's mercy, and compassion.”
